Summary
ECEC services represent one of the first settings of intercultural communication: within these spaces, children meet differences of everyday life, parents compare their childcare and educational models, at the same time as educators receive, mediate, and weave relationships.
In the last years, Italian ECEC services have welcomed increasing numbers of children and parents of migrant origins: the process has brought in fragments of different cultures, along with the request to get integrated into the local society. That said, about a half of foreign minors residing in Italy today are born here: reached the age of majority, they will become Italian citizens.
These presences push ECEC professionals to address and explore childcare practices against the backdrop of different cultural contexts, diversity in ECEC services, cultural representations of childhood, etc.
Building on feelings and thoughts expressed by immigrant mothers and ECEC professionals, the book depicts a journey across childhood cultures.
Body, food, linguistic choices, space and its usage, respect and autonomy... are some of the matters surrounding early childhood: in consideration of the present-day child’s world as a plural and multicultural patchwork, these aspects are narrated in a slightly different way this
