Can a preschool service, as a multicultural educational context, represent a meeting point and a place of dialogue for parents and children coming from different sociocultural backgrounds?
This question inspired a research whose goal was to describe and understand inner dynamics of ECEC services characterised by a significant presence of immigrant families and children. To do so, the research combined teachers’ experiences and knowledge with theoretical reflections coming from the fields of intercultural pedagogy.
On these bases, some topics were identified and analysed as being common to all the contexts, namely: reception and planning activities for children with different needs; teaching strategies aimed at enhancing Italian language knowledge; identification of practices and rules capable of combining both individual specificities and family cultures. Considering intercultural approaches and perspectives, a special attention was dedicated to the question of prejudices, family participation in the school life, potential conflicts esp. between adults, and practices supporting teachers in their everyday work. Finally, each topic was accompanied by reflections and practices useful for promoting construction of intercultural educational models.
